Yesterday I went to the supermarket to buy bread and milk.
When I got in line at the checkout, I noticed a lady in front of me who was staring at me insistently…
I ask her:
“Excuse me, do we know each other?”
And she:
“No, but you look a lot like my son!”
I smiled at her in surprise. After a moment she continued:
“He left a long time ago and I haven’t heard from him anymore…”
I didn’t know what to do or say and she continued, moved:
“You know… if I could, I would have hugged you…”
Even more embarrassed, I could only respond:
“Thank you so much.”
We continued in line and, before paying, she, with her cart full of goods, says to me:
“Can I ask you a favor?”
I thought he was asking me for money, but instead he said in a small voice,
“Can you say ‘Bye Mom’ to me when I leave?”
I stammered with emotion and answered yes and as he walked away I said out loud what he wanted to hear with tears in my eyes.
My turn comes to pay at the cash register, I pass around my bread and milk, and the cashier presents me with two receipts for a total of 200 euros.
Surprised, I asked for an explanation and she said:
“The lady who just came out said:
“My son pays for everything”.
